Artist’s Statement
I have been dancing since I could walk and doing routines since kindergarten. I eat, sleep, and breathe dance. My life revolves around my dance training. Dance is so much more than dancing to me it’s my passion, my dream, and heart and soul. I dance because it set me free from everything that’s around me or happening to me. Dance is my release, I dance when I’m hurt, upset, or happy. No matter what’s going on dance will always be my escape. This is a way for me to expression myself without using words. This helps me to connect with the audience through my movements. Dancing shows who I really am. One day I hope I can share my love for dancing to the world for everyone to see.
As a dancer I have so many aspirations. Such as dancing for major dance companies and being an inspiration to others. One day I would like to be just as big as Misty Copeland or Alvin Ailey. That’s why I push myself to limit all the time because I have this big dream in my heart that I know it will become a reality. I audition for a lot of summer dance programs so I can keep getting more opportunities to learn and grow. This dream that’s been set inside me will come true one day as long as I stay true to myself and staying determined.
One part of being a perform/dancer is making up choreography. I really don’t have a lot of experience of making up choreography for others, but I make up a lot of choreography for myself all the time. When I’m just dancing by myself I try to listen to the music and see how it makes me feel. Then from there the movements come to me. One thing that I struggle with is repeating moves over and over. Some ideas I’m trying to explore is, how to incorporate different levels of movements into my dances and how to know when to be more fluent or sharp. I’m still working on these ideas but one thing I am good at is opening up, being loose, and just letting myself go in the music. I will continue to grow and hopefully my weaknesses will become strengths. There is no doubt that there will be obstacles but I’m ready to overcome them to reach my dreams.

Mid-Term Reflection
This is my first year at Weaver and I’m really starting to like it, especially in the dance department. I can feel myself enjoying the classes and the people around me. We do our contemporary class. Doing these things everyday is helping me a lot because I am gaining more strength in this style of dance and just more strength in general. One thing that I really like about dance is that we get to do different styles of dance on Friday’s. Like we had a lady that is an amazing dancer. She has also danced in New York. She came to come teach a hip hop master class. That day was probably one of my favorite days so far this year. We also do lot of jazz on Friday’s, which is really fun to do to. It gives us an opportunity to see each other’s strengths in other techniques and styles.
We have our first concert coming up in two weeks or so and we have been working really hard on our dances for the performance. We have two dances to perform and that’s the class contemporary piece and the freshmen piece. The class piece has been finished for some time now and I really think that it’s coming together nicely. It looks pretty clean and we are starting to look like a unit. I think it’s cool how we are just starting to all dance with each other for the first time and we are already dancing really well together like we have known one another for a while. This really shows in our freshmen dance because we all come from different backgrounds and studios, but we have to come together and make a dance look like a unit. This freshmen dance is special because we all contributed to the dance by bringing parts of our solos that we had to make up, which was very stressful into our piece and make it into one big group dance. The music we dance to is so good. I can really connect to it and feel it through my body so I can really perform it well.
At the beginning of the year we set goals for ourselves so we can see if we have improved. My goals were to get more flexibility, to gain more stamina, and to get better balance. I can really see that I am improving as a dancer and especially on these three things. Doing our workouts everyday is helping me build my strength and stamina, our warm ups and stretching everyday is helping me get more flexible, and since I’m using my core more, my balance is getting a lot better too. Doing dance everyday at school and after is not just fun, but it’s really pushing me to be better and getting me closer to where I want to be. I am really enjoying myself and can’t wait for more great things to come.

Fall Concert Self-Reflection
This was my first concert at Weaver and it went great. I really enjoyed dancing with everyone in my PVA. Thursday’s show was a good show but there were some things to be fixed. The first dance I was in was the freshmen dance. This dance was pretty good. I feel that the timing was off at times, and in certain areas in the dance I could get my back leg to be straighter. On the positive side I had good facials and had really good energy throughout the whole dance. The audience responded really good to this performance. They were cheering really loud when we finished the piece. The next dance was the all group contemporary dance and this was pretty good too. I feel like the timing got off a few times here and there throughout the dance and the energy in my performance could have been better. I did really good with our line in the beginning and my smaller line. I also did really good with being sharp with my movements. The audience responded well to this dance. On Friday night’s show both of our dances were amazing and very exciting. The freshmen dance was just everything. All the things I messed up on in the Thursday show were fixed and it looked 10 times better. My energy was really good, also my movements were a whole lot cleaner. Our group dance was also great, I was more focused, energized, and movements were on the right timing. The audience’s response was pretty good for this night too. Overall I think that both concerts were great I hope that all my next ones will be just as good or better. I had a lot of fun dancing in this concert and I can’t wait for the next in the spring!

Self-Reflection Spring Concert
This was my last concert of my Freshmen year and I really enjoyed it. This performance was very important because we all got closer and more comfortable with each other and this was our last time to dance with all of us together until next year. Both nights the show was great, but there is always room to improve. On Thursday night’s performance, our Honors Ballet piece was good. We had great facials and energy and our timing improved a lot. I think I could work on relaxing my shoulders and arms in my wales. I can also make my moves look more graceful throughout the dance. A correction I still need to continue to work on, even though it has gotten better, is straightening my back leg in my leaps. The audience responded well to this piece. Both nights we got great responses when we did our little acting part in the beginning. It was a real crowd pleasure. Friday night I made the same mistakes, but they were better than Thursday night. I personally think this performance and audience was better than Thursday night. Even though I still have some things I need to continue to work on, I have improved a lot this year. I have gotten more flexible, I have more control over my body, and I have better stamina. I don’t expect for my goals to be achieved right away so I know I have to keep pushing myself to reach the goals I set. I know that with hard work and determination I will accomplish these goals. Hopefully next year we all will have met our current goals and have new goals to set for myself to help me improve as a performer and dancer. I am so proud of all my friends in the dance department we have all come a long way and I will miss them.

Mid- Semester Self Reflection
This year has really gone by fast, we are almost to the end. I can see the areas where I have drastically improved. At the beginning of the year, we all set goals to accomplish by the end of the year and I have worked really hard to reach them. I can honestly say that hard work and determination pays off. The goals I set for myself were to get more flexible, to gain more stamina, and to get better balance. This semester we only do ballet every day, and I truly believe that this is helping achieve my goals. At the barre`, I can see that my balance has gotten 10 times better. I am able to hold longer, not just on two legs but one leg as well. After we get off the barre`, we do our strengthening and conditioning part of class. Once we get to stretching portion of that I can tell that my flexibility has grown. I am either all the way down or almost all the way in my three splits. Even though this is not one of my goals I feel that I have grown in this as well. My strength in my upper body and abs have gotten so much stronger. When I first started dancing at Weaver, I could feel myself getting tired early into the class, and now I am just fine throughout the whole class without feeling drained. This means that my stamina is increasing. I know that if I keep pushing, I will continue to progress and grow even more, because there is always room for improvement.
In a few weeks, we will have our Spring Concert and I’m very excited about it. We have all worked extremely hard on our piece. It is going to be little bitter sweet because we all know that this will be our last piece with each other for this year. This piece is pretty special too, because we all in some way contributed to the dance and I thought that was really cool. I know it’s coming to an end, but I have really enjoyed myself this year in dance and all my new friends that I have learned to love.

Outside Dance Critique
For my Outside dance critique I went to see Onstage Dance Company’s annual recital. Overall the performance was great, but there is always room to improve. A few of the big things the whole studio could work on are straightening the legs, finishing their moves, and pointing their feet through every movement. There were times where I couldn’t tell whether or not the foot should be flexed or pointed, so they just need to be mindful of that. The thing that impressed me the most was how much energy they were giving on stage. The crowd was very engaged the whole time and I really enjoyed watching the performances. Their facial expressions and stage presence made people want to pay attention. Although the energy was great, too much energy can cause movements to look a little sloppy. Throughout the performance the choreography was really good and unique. They are competition dance studio, so everything is very animated and Broadway-like. I like how there were quite a few solos in the production. It gave kids their time to shine and showcase their abilities. I really enjoyed attending the program and can’t wait to go back to see what is in store.

Final Reflection
This semester I have really seen the growth and progress from the beginning to now. The goals I set for myself, I have accomplished. This semester was kind of hard for me because ballet is not my best style of dance, so I had to really push myself to my limit. Using the things I learned this semester I can use in every day life. I learned to come into dance class having a positive attitude and hoping for the best not the worst. I can use this in many things in life. Dance doesn’t just teach you to become great dancer, but also a great person. You learn how to work with all kinds of people and express yourself in the way you want to. Working with all of my new friends semester really helped me learned to do these things.
